Common questions

Apple's dictation only works in apps that expose the system dictation API. WaveCrab uses clipboard paste, so it works universally — in Electron apps, web browsers, Terminal, and anywhere else Apple's dictation fails. You also get 7 Whisper model sizes, 29 languages with optional English translation, and your choice of trigger key.
Yes — completely. After you download a Whisper model once during setup, WaveCrab requires zero internet to function. Everything runs on your Apple Silicon chip using Metal GPU acceleration. Internet is only needed to download or update models.
WaveCrab requires macOS 14.0 (Sonoma) or later running on Apple Silicon — M1, M2, M3, or M4. Intel Macs are not supported. The app uses GGML Metal for GPU-accelerated inference, which is exclusive to Apple Silicon.
WaveCrab supports 29 languages via OpenAI Whisper, including English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, Arabic, Russian, Polish, Turkish, Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch, Finnish, Danish, Czech, Romanian, Hungarian, Greek, Ukrainian, Catalan, Slovak, Slovenian, Croatian, Bulgarian, and Malay. You can also enable automatic language detection or translate any language to English.
You'll receive a license key by email immediately after purchase. Open WaveCrab → Settings → License, paste your key, and you're upgraded instantly. The key is verified locally via Ed25519 cryptography and stored securely in your macOS Keychain. No account, no login, no recurring charges.
The free trial caps each recording at 3 seconds and enforces a 5-second cooldown between recordings. Everything else is identical to Pro — all 29 languages, all 7 model sizes, works everywhere, fully private. The trial never expires and requires no credit card.
WaveCrab saves your clipboard, writes the transcribed text, simulates Cmd+V, then restores your original clipboard ~150ms later. If you copy something in that window, your copy wins — WaveCrab never overwrites content you intentionally copied. In practice the restore is invisible and instantaneous.
